There is a tradition of offering Bilvapatra during the worship of Shivling. It is believed that Bilvapatra is very dear to Lord Shiva. In such a situation, whenever Jalabhishek or Rudrabhishek is done on Shivling, Bilvapatra is offered on it. However, many rules have been mentioned in the scriptures regarding offering Bilvapatra on Shivling, which are considered necessary to be followed. The scriptures say that Bilvapatra offered in the wrong way does not yield results and the worship becomes faulty. In such a situation, let us know from astrologer Radhakant Vats how to offer Bilvapatra on Shivling and what things are important to keep in mind.

  • Should Bilvapatra be offered on Shivling straight or upside down?
Always offer three-leafed Belpatra to Shivling. Receipts should not be issued anywhere. Also, the bill should not be dry or blistered.
  • Before offering the Bilvapatra, it should be washed with Gangajal. Bilvapatra should be offered after offering water to the Shivling. Often people first offer the Bilva and then water.
  • Bilvapatra should be offered on Shivling with smooth side. While offering Bilvapatra, one should chant Prasad Mantra or else one can also chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' mantra.
  • Bilva leaves should always be offered on Shivling in the number of 1, 5, 11, 21. If Ram is written on the Bilva leaf and offered on Shiv Linga, then Lord Shiva is pleased and showers his blessings.
  • The Bilvapatra should always be offered upside down on the Shivling. Because if the Bilvapatra is placed straight on the Shivling, its back part touches the Shivling and the front part touches the Shivling.
  • In such a situation, whenever you offer Bilvapatra on Shivling, offer it upside down. Also, the front part of the Bilvapatra will touch the Shivling and there will be no fault in the worship.
