There has once again been a political earthquake in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday made such a sensational and serious allegation against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has created a stir in the entire country.
Mamata Banerjee claims that before the elections, BJP has removed the names of 54 lakh people from the voter list of Bengal by using Artificial Intelligence (AI)!
What is Mamata Banerjee’s full allegation?
Addressing a rally in Bankura, Mamata Didi cautioned people, saying, “Don’t believe every video on social media these days. This is the age of AI… BJP is adding fake names to snatch your right to vote. When you go to vote, you will find out that someone else has cast your vote!”
He also alleged that BJP had actually hatched a conspiracy to remove 1.5 crore names and instructions were being given to Election Commission officials on WhatsApp.
Trouble and a tragic death in the name of ‘SIR’
Mamata Banerjee also accused people of being harassed in the name of ‘SIR’ (Special Intensive Revision). SIR is a process of the Election Commission in which the voter list is scrutinized.
He claimed, “An elderly man in Purulia was called for SIR hearing. He felt so humiliated by this that he committed suicide. Have some shame and stop harassing the people of Bengal in the name of SIR.”
Have names really been removed from the voter list?
The Election Commission’s side has also come forward in this entire matter. According to the new draft list of the Election Commission, more than 58 lakh names are missing from the voter list of Bengal. The total number of voters in the state has decreased from 7.66 crore to 7.08 crore.
What does the Election Commission say?
The Election Commission says that these names have been removed for several reasons, such as:
- People who have died.
- People who have shifted somewhere else forever.
- Whose name was mistakenly recorded at two places.
The Election Commission has also said that this is not the final list yet, and people can get their names re-added by registering their complaints.
BJP hits back: “We will drive out the infiltrators”
At the same time, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has hit back at Mamata Banerjee’s allegations. He said that Mamata government itself is allowing illegal infiltrators to come from Bangladesh for political gains, due to which the environment of Bengal is deteriorating. “We will identify these infiltrators and drive them out,” he said.
This whole matter is now stuck between ‘vote politics’ and ‘identity battle’, which is sure to have an impact on the upcoming elections.
