After Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) won the double title, there is a flood of celebration in the entire Bengaluru city, the pictures of which are surprising to everyone. There is no space left to even set foot on the roads and only a sea of red and golden colors is visible everywhere. RCB fans took to the streets at midnight to celebrate their team’s historic and incredible double title win. But amidst this unprecedented crowd, the biggest praise is being given to the Bengaluru Police, which, taking a big lesson from the old global tragedy that happened during the celebration of Paris Saint Germain (PSG), took charge in time and saved the city from a major accident.
‘Red Army’ storms the streets of Bengaluru at midnight
As soon as RCB won the title, it seemed as if Diwali and Holi started simultaneously all over Bengaluru. The roads from Chinnaswamy Stadium to MG Road, Brigade Road and Koramangala were completely covered with RCB fans. Lakhs of youth, elders and children were seen dancing and singing on the streets with the team flag in their hands, tears of joy in their eyes and slogans of ‘RCB-RCB’ on their lips. The condition of the crowd was such that the wheels of the vehicles stopped completely and there was a traffic jam several kilometers long in the entire city. In such an uncontrolled crowd, there was a hundred percent possibility of a stampede and a major accident.
The police had learned a big lesson from that dreadful tragedy in Paris.
Top officials of Bengaluru Police remembered very well that when a similar flood of football fans had taken to the streets after PSG’s victory in France, there had been a major tragedy due to huge chaos and stampede, in which many people had lost their lives. Keeping in mind such accidents occurring during sports celebrations at the global level, Bengaluru Police this time implemented a very hi-tech and strict crowd management plan. The police had already anticipated that the enthusiasm of the fans would be sky high after RCB’s victory, hence additional police forces and rapid action teams were already deployed at strategic points across the city.
The battle was handled not by lathi charge but by understanding and barricading.
Usually, police use lathicharge or force to disperse such unruly crowds, which further increases the risk of stampede. But Bengaluru Police showed utmost sensitivity and understanding. The police implemented one-way routes at the main intersections of the city and divided the crowd into small pieces by forming a human chain so that there was no pressure at one place. Through loudspeakers, fans were continuously appealed to maintain peace and return home safely. The result of this excellent and smart strategy of the police was that this historic celebration of lakhs of people was completed in a completely safe and peaceful manner without any untoward incident or anyone getting hurt.
