Especially on Monday of Sawan, devotees keep a fast with full devotion and offer water, belpatra, dhatura etc. on the Shivling. Special care should be taken to the method and material of worship to please Shiva. While some things are very dear to Shiva, there are some who are considered taboo to offer on Shivling. Some such important things which should not be used in Shiva worship, are as follows: Tulsi: Lord Vishnu is very dear to Tulsi, but it is not offered to Shiva. It is believed that Shiva cursed Tulsi, so its use is forbidden in his worship. Ketaki flower: It is believed that Lord Shiva also cursed the flower of Ketki. For this reason, the flowers of Ketki are never offered in the worship of Shiva. Turmeric: Turmeric is usually used to worship goddesses. This Shiva is not climbed on the Linga. Narial water: Coconut water can be used for consecration on Shivling, but should not offer coconut fruit, or especially coconut water, Shiva ji.
