News India Live, Digital Desk: There is big news for the candidates waiting for Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh. Yogi government cabinet minister and Nishad Party President Dr. Sanjay Nishad has publicly admitted for the first time that the three-tier Panchayat elections in the state will now be held only after the 2027 assembly elections. This statement of the Minister has given a big blow to thousands of potential candidates preparing for the Panchayat elections, who were busy strengthening their ground in the villages for the last several months.
Reservation and legal maneuvers created a problem
Sanjay Nishad has mainly cited technical and constitutional reasons behind postponing the elections. He said that Panchayat elections are a long process and currently the matter of reservation is pending in the court. According to the minister, it is not possible to hold elections until the reservation status of backward classes and women is completely clear and their correct counting is done. He argued that the court would also not allow elections without completing the reservation process, and it would take a lot of time to complete these processes.
“Workers will clash with their own people”: fear of internal strife
The minister also explained an interesting political mathematics behind postponing the elections. He clarified that holding Panchayat elections just before the assembly elections could be risky for the ruling coalition. Sanjay Nishad said, “In Panchayat elections, many contenders from our alliance are often face to face from the same village. If the party supports one, then the other contenders can get angry and cause harm in the assembly elections. This will increase factionalism within the party, which we want to avoid before the main elections of 2027.”
Minister OP Rajbhar also changed his tone, the ball is now in the court.
Interestingly, in line with Sanjay Nishad, Panchayati Raj Minister OP Rajbhar has also changed his stand. Rajbhar, who till now was talking about holding elections on time and printing ballot papers, is now also telling the matter to be in the High Court’s court. He said that now everything will depend on the instructions of the court. It is clear from this new strategy of the government that its entire focus is now on laying the chessboard for the 2027 assembly instead of rural elections.
Disappointment among candidates, opposition movement increased
This stance of the government has caused great disappointment among the rural leaders who have spent lakhs of rupees through posters, banners and public relations. Whereas opposition parties have termed it as failure of the government and fear of defeat. Political analysts believe that postponing the Panchayat elections will give the government time to remove the resentment of the workers at the grassroots level and make a new strategy for the assembly elections, but it may also affect the pace of rural development works.
