News India Live, Digital Desk: Amidst the nationwide uproar over UGC’s new Equity Regulations 2026, the Supreme Court has banned it with immediate effect. After this decision of the court, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has launched a scathing attack on the central government. RJD’s senior spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari has called it a ‘victory for constitutional values’ and a defeat for the ‘divisive policies’ of the central government.
What did the Supreme Court say? (The Stay Order)
The bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, while hearing on Thursday (January 29, 2026), said:
Unclear Language: The court acknowledged that the definition of ‘discrimination’ in the 2026 rules is very vague and can be misused.
Fear of Partition: The court remarked that educational institutions should be a symbol of the unity of the country and not a medium to divide the society.
Interim Order: next hearing 19 March 2026 Will happen. Till then the old rules of 2012 will remain applicable.
Strong attack from Mrityunjay Tiwari (RJD spokesperson)
After the Supreme Court order, RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari said the following important things while talking to the media:
Victory of social justice: Tiwari said, “We were saying from the beginning that this bill is a conspiracy to kill the rights of Dalits, backward people and minorities. By banning it, the Supreme Court has exposed the dark deeds of the government.”
Allegation of discrimination: He alleged that the government was bringing such rules which would create a divide between students on campus. RJD will continue to fight for social justice from streets to courts.
Demand for resignation from the government: The RJD spokesperson said the government should apologize for bringing such a ‘vague and flawed’ law in a sacred area like education.

Interestingly, while the official spokesperson of RJD is protesting, former RJD leader Shivanand Tiwari Had defended these rules a few days ago. He had said that the upper caste community should not oppose it without reading it. However, officially the RJD led by Tejashwi Yadav has welcomed the Supreme Court’s stay.
What will happen next?
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Central Government and the UGC seeking their response. Now on March 19, it will be decided whether these rules will be amended or they will be completely canceled. Till then, the old guidelines of 2012 will remain in effect in universities across the country.
