
The situation is getting worse in the Central African country. Rwanda-backed rebels claimed control of Goma, eastern Congo’s largest city, on Monday morning. The Congolese government said the rebel advance was a ‘declaration of war’. At the same time, regarding the incident, the United Nations has said that 20 lakh people of the city are in extreme panic.
Rebels appeal to people to remain calm
M-23 rebels have announced the capture of Goma city in a statement. The rebels made the announcement shortly before the end of a 48-hour deadline given to the Congolese army to lay down their arms. In the statement the rebels called on the people of Goma to remain calm and called on members of the Congolese army to gather at the central stadium.
Situation worsened in Goma
According to a UN report, one-third of the population of North Kivu province is currently displaced and the situation could worsen if the rebels capture Goma. The city of Goma is located in North Kivu province. UN peacekeepers launched an operation on surrendering service members on the outskirts of the city late Sunday night.
‘War situation in the country’
Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muya called for the protection of civilians in a video posted on the social media platform X, saying the country was in a state of war. Congo has also severed diplomatic relations with Rwanda. Congo says Rwanda is supporting the rebels.
