When we hear the word “drug”, the first names that come to our mind are marijuana, hashish, opium and ganja. These similar looking drugs are actually made in different ways. Their consumption also has different effects on the body. The laws regarding drug use and production in India are very strict, yet people are often unaware of them. To remove this confusion, it is important to explain their production methods, effects and side effects in simple words.

What is opium?

Opium is a hard and sticky sap that comes from the opium plant. When an incision is made on the stem of the plant, the white milky liquid that comes out of it turns brown when it comes in contact with air. This changed colored substance is called opium. It contains highly addictive substances like morphine and codeine. Opium is very addictive, which starts affecting the nervous system as soon as it is consumed. It produces its effect in the body. Its effect lasts for a very long time, and the possibility of addiction increases.

This substance is found in marijuana

Marijuana is made by drying the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant. It contains a chemical called THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), which has a direct effect on the brain. Marijuana is considered moderately addictive. It affects mood, thinking, and sense of time, but is not considered as dangerous as opium.

Hashish is the most deadly

Charas is also made from the hemp plant, but its process is different. The flowers of the fresh plant are rubbed by hand to extract a black, sticky resin. This is charas, which is more intoxicating than ganja. The effect of charas is very strong and deep. Even in small quantities, its intoxication lasts for a long time.

cannabis

Bhang is made by drying and grinding the leaves of the hemp plant. Its consumption is common in India on festivals like Holi. Its consumption is prohibited by law. The intoxication of cannabis is the mildest. It provides relief to the body, but its excessive consumption is harmful. Hemp seeds are also rich in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and amino acids. However, cannabis should be consumed in a controlled manner, as a medicine, and only on the advice of a doctor.
