Pakistan’s Ambassador to Russia Faisal Niaz Tirmizi has praised the historic coordination between India and Pakistan on nuclear security. In an interview given to an international news portal, Tirmizi said that the nuclear security record of India and Pakistan has been very excellent and the ‘guarantee’ between the two countries of not attacking each other’s nuclear sites is an example for the whole world today.
“The world should learn a lesson from the Middle East war”
Ambassador Tirmizi has given this statement at a time when the conflict between Israel and Iran in West Asia is at its peak. Referring to the recent attacks on Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant (allegedly by Israel), he said that if nuclear plants were targeted, the consequences would be disastrous not only for that country but for the entire region. He said, “The history of India and Pakistan is witness to the fact that we have maintained the sanctity of our nuclear facilities even in the most difficult times. Israel should take a lesson from this that nuclear facilities should never be the target of attack.”
Historic agreement: When dignity was maintained even amidst tension
It is noteworthy that there was a bilateral agreement between India and Pakistan in 1988, under which both the countries share the list of their nuclear sites with each other on January 1 every year. The main objective of this agreement is to ensure that even in a war-like situation, neither side will attack the nuclear centers of the other. Describing this agreement as ‘mutual guarantee’, Tirmizi said that it is this trust that has saved South Asia from nuclear disaster.
Will Russia become an ‘honest broker’ between India and Pakistan?
During the interview, the Pakistani Ambassador also emphasized the role of Russia in melting the ice in the relations between India and Pakistan. He said that Russia has very close and long-standing relations with India, and Pakistan is also now increasing cooperation with Russia and is keen to join BRICS. Tirmizi expressed hope that Russia can play the role of a ‘fair broker’ between the two countries so that mutual relations can improve and regional security can be further strengthened.
