A new high-speed era is about to begin in the field of public transport for crores of daily commuters, employed youth and entrepreneurs of Delhi-NCR. After the stupendous success of NaMo Bharat Rapid Rail on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is now all set to connect the entire NCR with Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) trains with a design speed of 180 kmph. The mega action plan to interconnect major cities of Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh by making Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan the main mega-transit hub has been finalized.
After getting the in-principle green signal from the Public Investment Board (PIB), now with the final approval of the Union Cabinet, work on 4 new major corridors will start on the ground. These four routes include Delhi-Sonipat-Panipat-Karnal, Delhi-Gurugram-SNB-Alwar, Ghaziabad to Noida International Airport (Jewar) and Gurugram-Faridabad-Noida-Greater Noida Inter-City Corridor. This huge rail network will not only end the suffocating traffic jams and air pollution on the borders of Delhi forever, but will also make the journey from remote towns of NCR to Delhi and major international airports within minutes. Let us understand the alignment, proposed stations and financial structure of these four new routes in detail.
This corridor will be no less than a boon for the GT Road (National Highway-44) belt, which is called the lifeline connecting Delhi to North Haryana and Punjab. This corridor, to be built at an estimated cost of about ₹33,000 crore, will be 136 kilometers long. This entire track will be built elevated in most parts parallel to NH-44.
-
Routes and major stations: This route will start from Delhi’s main transit hub Sarai Kale Khan and enter the Haryana border via Indraprastha, Kashmiri Gate, Burari and Narela. Its major stations in Haryana will be Kundli, KMP Interchange, Sonipat, Ganaur, Samalkha, Panipat and Karnal.
-
Reduction in travel time: Currently, it takes 3 to 4 hours to go from Delhi to Karnal by road, but at the operational speed of 160 km/hr, Namo Bharat train will cover this distance in just 90 minutes.
-
Who will get the benefit: Lakhs of students and businessmen commuting to Delhi will be able to commute daily from Sonipat’s Education City (Ashoka, OP Jindal etc Universities), Panipat’s textile and refinery industries and Karnal’s agro-industrial hub.
The Delhi-Gurugram-Rewari-Alwar corridor, connecting the vast industrial corridor of Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan, will be 164 to 196 kilometers long with a total estimated cost of over ₹32,000 crore. In the first phase (Phase-1) of this corridor, construction from Delhi to Bawal and Behror (about 93.5 to 107 km) will be done on priority basis.
-
Routes and proposed stations: Departing from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi, the train will reach Aerocity near Jor Bagh (INA), Munirka and Indira Gandhi International Airport through underground and elevated routes. After this, after entering Haryana, it will go to Udyog Vihar, Cyber City, Rajiv Chowk, Khedki Daula, Manesar, Panchgaon (KMP Junction), Dharuhera, Rewari and Bawal. In Rajasthan section it will reach SNB (Shahjahanpur-Neemrana-Behror) and Alwar.
-
Travel time: The distance from Delhi’s Aerocity to Manesar will be covered in just 20 minutes and from Delhi to Bawal in 67 minutes.
-
Importance: This corridor will decongest the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway (NH-48) and connect the country’s largest automobile and electronic manufacturing hub of Manesar-Dharuhera-Neemrana with Delhi’s financial and corporate sectors.
The Uttar Pradesh government and NCRTC have advanced the detailed project report (DPR) of the approximately 72.44 km long corridor to directly connect the largest industrial and residential areas of West UP with the Noida International Airport being built in Jewar. This corridor will directly interconnect with the existing Ghaziabad station of Delhi-Meerut RRTS.
-
Root and Structure: Out of the total 72.44 km, about 71.15 km will be elevated and about 1.29 km near Jewar Airport will be underground. This route will originate from Ghaziabad and enter directly inside Jewar Airport Terminal via Greater Noida West (Char Murti Chowk), Surajpur, Knowledge Park-V, Pari Chowk and Sectors 18, 20 and 28 (Medical Device and Film City Cluster) of Yamuna Expressway.
-
Hybrid Model (Rapid Rail + Local Metro): A total of 22 stations are proposed on this corridor. On the lines of Delhi-Meerut, superfast Namo Bharat trains will stop at 11 stations, while local metro trains will run parallel on the same track for local passengers.
-
Travel time: It will take less than 40 to 50 minutes to reach Jewar Airport from Meerut and Ghaziabad.
Till now, to go from NCR sub-cities like Gurugram to Faridabad or Noida, passengers had to either take a long detour by changing metro from within Delhi or waste hours in the heavy traffic of Badarpur and Kalindi Kunj. To eradicate this problem from its roots, a new inter-city corridor of about 64 kilometers has been planned.
-
Route and Alignment: This route will start from IFFCO Chowk/Cyber City in Gurugram, crossing Yamuna River via Bata Chowk and Ballabhgarh in Faridabad and will directly connect to Noida Sector 142 and Greater Noida.
-
Layout of stations: 7 main Namo Bharat Rapid Rail stations and 15 integrated metro stations will be built on this entire 64 km long route.
-
Revolution in Travel: The distance from Gurugram to Faridabad which takes one and a half hours by road during peak hours will be reduced to just 20 minutes by Namo Bharat train. Whereas passengers going directly from Gurugram to Noida Airport or Greater Noida will be able to reach their destination within 50 minutes without entering Delhi.
| Corridor Name | Total Length (km) | Connecting States/Cities | Main Station/Junction | Speed and estimated travel time |
| Delhi-Panipat-Karnal | 136 km | Delhi and Haryana | Sarai Kale Khan, Kashmiri Gate, Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal | 160 km/h; Delhi to Karnal ~90 minutes |
| Delhi-Gurugram-Alwar | 164-196 km (Phase-1: ~93 km) | Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan | Aerocity, Cyber City, Rajiv Chowk, Manesar, Bawal, Behror | 160 km/h; Aerocity to Manesar ~20 minutes |
| Ghaziabad-Jewar Airport | 72.44 km | Uttar Pradesh (Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar) | Ghaziabad Junction, Greater Noida West, Pari Chowk, Jewar Terminal | 160 km/h; Jewar ~40 minutes from Ghaziabad |
| Gurugram-Faridabad-Noida | 64 km | Haryana and Uttar Pradesh | IFFCO Chowk, Bata Chowk Faridabad, Noida Sector 142 | 160 km/h; Gurugram to Faridabad ~20 minutes |
The most innovative engineering feature of the NCRTC Master Plan is its ‘Interoperability’ model. Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan station will be the central heart of this entire network.
Here the tracks of the three main lines Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Panipat and Delhi-Alwar will come together in the same multi-storey station complex and will be technically connected. Its biggest advantage will be that if a passenger has to go directly to Gurugram or Panipat from Meerut, he will not need to get off the train and catch another train or run to another platform with his luggage. Trains will be able to run directly from one route to another without interruption through the same track network.
The laying of this new network of Namo Bharat trains will see revolutionary changes in the economy and lifestyle of NCR:
-
Historic reduction in pollution and carbon emissions: When lakhs of people leave their personal cars and bikes every day and use the world-class AC Rapid Rail, the vehicle pressure on the highways will reduce by 35%, which will provide permanent relief from the deadly smog in Delhi-NCR during winters.
-
Affordable Housing and De-congestion: As an alternative to the extremely expensive flats in Delhi and Gurugram, people will now be able to choose to live in affordable cities like Sonipat, Panipat, Dharuhera, Greater Noida and Palwal, because despite living 100 kilometers away, their office will be just 45 to 50 minutes away.
-
Speed up industrial development: The Japanese Zone of Neemrana, the Automobile Cluster of Manesar, the Textile Hub of Panipat and the Logistics Park being built around Jewar will be directly equipped with high-speed connectivity.
NaMo Bharat is not just a train, but it is the backbone of the modern infrastructure of developed India in the coming decades which will prove to be a milestone in putting Delhi-NCR at par with global megapolises like Tokyo and Seoul.
