A very painful and major boat accident has come to light from the flood sub-division area adjacent to Patna, the capital of Bihar. In the early morning of Thursday (28 May 2026), a boat filled with laborers and Parwal (vegetable) suddenly became unbalanced and overturned in the river Ganga. After this tragic accident, there was an outcry at the Ganga Ghat.

According to initial information, a total of 14 people were on board the boat, who went missing in the river after the accident. Due to the promptness of local divers and administration, till now 6 people have been safely rescued and admitted to the hospital, while the bodies of 3 people have been recovered. A large-scale rescue operation is being carried out in the river to search for the remaining missing people. It is feared that the death toll may increase further.

All the laborers were residents of Samastipur, were going to Diara to pluck Parwal.

All the victims of the accident were residents of Samastipur district. All of them were laborers and farmers, who had left their homes early in the morning to pluck the Parwal crop grown in the flood area (Diara area) across the river Ganga and bring it to the market. As soon as the boat floods Umanath area When it reached near, it sank into deep water. As soon as the news of the incident spread from Samastipur to flood, there was an uproar among the affected families and a huge crowd of hundreds of villagers gathered on the river bank.

Excessive load and gross negligence of the sailor became the reason

Initial investigation by local eyewitnesses and the administration has revealed serious negligence of the sailor and ignorance of rules as the reason behind the accident:

  • Overloading: The boat was quite small in size, but it had more workers than its capacity and a huge quantity of Parwal sacks were also loaded on it. Due to excessive weight, the boat lost balance in the middle of the river.

  • Lack of safety equipment: There was no life saving material like life jacket or life buoy (rescue tube) on board the boat. If there had been safety equipment, perhaps everyone’s lives could have been saved.

Relief and rescue work underway on the spot, demand for compensation

As soon as information about the accident was received, senior officials of flood sub-division administration, local police station and teams of Disaster Management Department (SDRF/NDRF) immediately reached the spot.

With the help of local divers, an intensive search operation is being conducted in the river to find the missing people. The six people who were rescued alive are undergoing treatment in a nearby hospital. Meanwhile, local public representatives expressed grief and demanded the administration to search for the missing people as soon as possible and appropriate government compensation for the dependents of the deceased.

Serious questions raised on claims of safe boat operation

This heart-wrenching accident has exposed the administrative claims regarding safe boat operation in the river Ganga. Local villagers allege that poor laborers and farmers doing farming in Diara area risk their lives every day to cross the river in such small and dilapidated boats. There is no administrative staff present at the ghats to prevent overloading, the consequences of which today these innocent laborers have to bear the brunt of this by sacrificing their lives.
