‘Magh Mela’, which gives freedom from sins, is going to be held in Prayagraj, where the drops of nectar had fallen.

It is said that there comes a month in a year when even the gods descend on the land of Prayagraj (Allahabad) and the water of the confluence becomes ‘nectar’ and not Ganga water. This holy month is the month of Magh, and in this month the world’s largest spiritual fair – Magh Mela is held.

It is believed that a dip in the holy waters of Sangam during this month washes away the sins of many births of a person and shows him the path of liberation from the cycle of birth and death. This time this great festival is starting from 3 January 2026.

Why is there such a deep connection between Prayagraj and Magh Mela?

Its story is very old and interesting.

• Brahma ji’s first yajna: According to the Puranas, when Brahma ji created this universe, he performed his first ‘yagya’ on this earth. ‘Pra’ means ‘first’ and ‘Yag’ means ‘sacrifice’. This is why it got its name ‘Prayag’.
• When drops of nectar were spilled: But the biggest reason for holding the fair here is nectar. When the pot of nectar emerged from the churning of the ocean, the gods and demons started fighting over it. Meanwhile, some drops of nectar fell at four places on earth – Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik and the fourth place was Prayagraj.

It is believed that in the month of Magh, the water of the Sangam of Prayagraj literally becomes like nectar, and that is why bathing here is considered to give salvation.

‘Kalpavaas’: When people leave the world and settle on the banks of the Sangam

Magh Mela is not just a day or two of bathing, but is also the time of ‘Kalpvas’. It is an arduous spiritual journey of a month, in which thousands of people leave their homes, families and comforts and live in tents on the Sangam banks.

Kalpavasi during:

• Sleep on the ground.
• Eat satvik food only once a day.
• And take bath in cold Sangam water three times a day.
  It is believed that whoever completes Kalpavas with a true heart, gets freedom from the bondage of birth and death.

2026 Biggest bath of Magh Mela (Shahi Snan)

If you cannot go for the whole month, then the importance of bathing increases manifold on these special days:

• Makar Sankranti: On this day, Sun God Uttarayan occurs and the fair begins formally.
• Mauni Amavasya: This is the biggest and most important bathing festival of Magh Mela. On this day lakhs of people take a dip in silence.
• Basant Panchami: The day of worship of Mother Saraswati, on this day also there is an atmosphere like a royal bath.
• Maghi Purnima: On this day Kalpavas is completed and the gods return to their worlds.

Magh Mela is not just a fair, but an experience of faith, belief and finding oneself, which cannot be expressed in words, can only be felt.
