According to the latest data, there is going to be a record increase in MBBS seats for the academic session 2026-27. The rules for approval of new medical colleges and expansion of seats in existing colleges have been made extremely flexible, which will now make it easier to dream of becoming a doctor.

The government has also given green signal to 43 new medical colleges, taking the total number of medical colleges to 822.
3 big changes of NMC: Now the pace of seats will not stop
The National Medical Commission has made three revolutionary changes in the new guidelines issued for medical colleges (UG-MSR 2023), which will directly benefit the students:
Limit of 150 seats over: Earlier, the maximum ‘cap’ (limit) of 150 MBBS seats for any medical college was fixed. Now it has been removed. Colleges that meet the standards of infrastructure and faculty will now be able to apply for more than 150 seats.
Rule of 100 seats per 10 lakh population postponed: NMC has currently suspended the rule under which only 100 MBBS seats could be allotted per 10 lakh population of a state. This has paved the way for opening of new colleges in South Indian states and big states.
Easy standards for new colleges: Now it will be easy to start a new college with 50, 100 and 150 seats. If the college has enough beds and clinical data, they can start directly adding more seats.
Emphasis on eliminating regional inequality
The main focus of the government is on those areas where there were no medical colleges till now. New seats are being created in ‘Aspirational Districts’ and rural areas by linking district hospitals with medical colleges. With this, not only will students get education near home, but there will also be a big improvement in health facilities in those areas. The government has also allocated a budget of more than Rs 41,000 crore for this.
What does this mean for students?
Direct effect of this huge increase in seats NEET UG Cut-off But it will happen. Experts believe that with the increase in the number of seats, the competitive pressure will reduce slightly and the chances of securing a seat in a government college will also increase for students scoring 550 to 600 marks. However, students have been advised to keep a close eye on the counseling process and JoSAA or MCC rules so that their year does not get wasted due to any technical glitch at the time of seat allotment.
