Nuzoma was not only the first President of Namibia, but also one of the most influential leaders of the African continent. Dr. Sam Shafishuna Nujoma was born on 12 May 1929 in Namibia, at that time the area was a victim of colonialist rule of South Africa and racial discrimination. The people of this region, who were under South Africa for nearly 75 years, were also deprived of basic human rights. In 1960, Nuzoma co-established the ‘South West Africa People’s Organization’ (SWAPO) to raise his voice against this harassment, which gave a new direction to the struggle for Namibia.
Swapo fought a guerrilla war against South African rule. Nuzoma himself had to face exile from his own country in 1960. He gathered support for the independence of Namibia all over the world while living in an exiled life for about 30 years. Following 30 years of struggle and international pressure, Namibia gained complete independence from South Africa’s possession on 21 March 1990. On the same day, Dr. Sam Nujoma was sworn in as the first President of independent Namibia. He played an important role in building a new nation while holding this post from 1990 to 2005. Under his leadership, Namibia started following the path of democracy, unity and economic development.
