The month of Sawan (Shravan) is considered extremely sacred and fruitful for the devotion of Lord Shiva (Mahadev). During this entire month, lakhs of Shiva devotees (Kanwariyas) from all over the country go on Kanwar Yatra, showing their devotion and faith. This year in 2026, Kanwar Yatra is going to start from 30th July and it will conclude with the Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva on Sawan Shivratri on 11th August.

Kanwar Yatra is not just a walking journey, but it is a festival of extremely difficult meditation and strict resolutions. Many religious rules are strictly followed during this journey. One of the most prominent and important rules is that Kanwar is never kept on the ground.

Why is it prohibited to keep Kanwar on the ground?

According to religious beliefs and scriptures:

1. Purity of Ganga water: Ganga water or the water of holy rivers filled in Kanwar is extremely pure and revered. Devotees take a pledge and fill water from the river bank so that it can be offered directly to the Shivalinga.

2. Avoidance of inaccuracy: It is believed that if Kanwar or the holy water kept in it touches the ground, it becomes impure and unholy. Therefore, until the Jalabhishek is done, touching it with the ground is avoided.

3. Rule of shoulder lifting: The Kanwariyas carry the Kanwar on their shoulders throughout the journey. Even at the time of rest, instead of keeping the Kanwar on the ground, keep it on the path. Special Kanwar Stand Or it is hung at a high place (tree branch or stand).

Does keeping Kanwar on the ground break the journey?

According to religious belief, if the holy water filled in Kanwar or any part of Kanwar accidentally touches the ground, then the ‘Akhand Sankalp’ of Kanwar Yatra is considered broken (disrupted). According to Sanatan tradition, Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva is not performed with water that has touched the ground.

What to do if Kanwar is kept on the ground by mistake?

If a Kanwariya unknowingly or accidentally places Kanwar on the ground, the following steps should be taken as per religious rules:

• Apologies: First of all, with folded hands, sincerely ask for forgiveness from Lord Bholenath for your mistake.

• Mantra chanting: sitting in a sacred place with devotion ‘Om Namah Shivay’ Or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Chant.

• Re-watering (re-resolution): In such a situation, devotees who follow the rules sincerely, instead of continuing their journey from there, again go to Haridwar, Rishikesh, Gangotri or the banks of the nearest holy river, again fill with pure water and start their Kanwar Yatra afresh.
