He represents the anger and destructive form of Lord Shiva but is considered to be extremely kind and protector for his devotees. According to the Puranas: According to the Puranas, there was a dispute between Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh Shiva about the superiority. Brahma ji said some derogatory words for Lord Shiva with his fifth face, which made Shiva extremely angry. This anger of Shiva led to a terrible form from his eyebrows, called ‘Kaal Bhairav’. Kal Bhairav was of extremely terrible form – he had a trident, skull, sword and loop in his hands, he was covered with consumer and his form was terrible. Fire was coming out of his body. The angry Kaal Bhairav immediately cut the mouth of Brahma ji, from which he insulted Shiva. This act was like the sin of Brahmana, so Kal Bhairav’s head in Bhairav’s hand, Brahma’s head (Brahma crank) was stuck and he started wandering due to this sin. He traveled to many places, but the skull did not separate from him. Finally, when he reached Varanasi Kashi, on reaching there, Brahma Kapal separated from his hand and he was freed from the sin of Brahmana. Therefore, Kaal Bhairav is worshiped in Kashi as ‘Kotwal of Kashi’ (protector of Kashi). They are also called Dandapani (punishment), who punish sinners and protect their devotees. Through this story, a message has been given that the result of ego and disrespect is always destructive. Kaal Bhairav is worshiped mainly to remove obstacles, conquer enemies and protect against evil forces. He is specially worshiped on Bhairav Ashtami so that they can give the devotees to get rid of fear and happiness and prosperity in life.
