Amid the ongoing devastating and fierce war in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) has killed Hamas’s new military commander Mohammad Odeh in a major air strike based on a very accurate and strong intelligence input. This is considered to be Israel’s second biggest and deadliest success against the top military leadership of Hamas in less than two weeks.
This high-profile and secret military operation has been officially confirmed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz by issuing a joint statement. The Israeli government has declared Mohammed Odeh the supreme head of Hamas’s most dreaded military wing and one of the main conspirators of the suicide and historic cross-border attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Air strike in Rimal area of Gaza City, multi-storey building reduced to debris
Following precise input from Israeli intelligence agency Shin Bet, Israeli fighter planes targeted a multi-storey residential building located in the very busy and posh Rimal area of western Gaza City. The Israeli Air Force bombed with such precision that the upper floor where Mohammed Odeh was hiding was completely turned into a pile of debris.
According to local sources, three people died on the spot in this gruesome attack, while more than 20 others were seriously injured. While on one hand Israel’s top political and military leadership has made strong claims about the death of Mohammad Odeh and initial intelligence assessments are also confirming this, on the other hand Hamas has currently maintained complete silence on the targeting of its top commander and has not issued any official statement.
Who was Mohammed Odeh? Al-Qassam remained chief of the brigade for just a week
Mohammed Odeh’s tenure as supreme commander of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ main military wing, was one of the shortest in history, tumultuous and ill-fated. He took command of this dangerous post this month on 18 May 2026 and within just a week he became the victim of an Israeli missile.
Let us tell you that commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad, who held this post just before Odeh, was killed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in an airstrike along with his entire family in Gaza on May 15. Just three days after al-Haddad’s death, Hamas’s Majlis-e-Shura appointed Odeh as the new chief. Before becoming the chief of the al-Qassam Brigades, Odeh had for a long time been the head of Hamas’s most dangerous ‘Military Intelligence Department’. He was considered one of the most experienced, vicious and brutal security operators in Hamas history.
Blueprint for October 7 attacks was prepared, Israeli informers were eliminated
International defense analysts believe that Odeh was the last surviving senior leader of Hamas’ High Military Council after Israeli attacks that have been selectively targeting the entire command structure of Hamas for the past several months. According to Israeli intelligence inputs, Odeh played the most important role in preparing the complete blueprint and military outline for the October 7, 2023 attacks.
While serving as the chief of the intelligence wing, he had collected highly sensitive information about the Israeli military base located near the Gaza border and had identified the weaknesses of the IDF’s Gaza Division, on the basis of which Hamas fighters were able to break through Israel’s impenetrable security cordon and enter inside.
