News India Live, Digital Desk: The holy festival of Chaitra Navratri (Chaitra Navratri 2026) has started and crores of houses are busy worshiping Goddess Durga. Akhand Jyoti Has been ignited. It is believed that this flame, which burns for nine days, removes negativity from the house. But sometimes this flame gets extinguished due to gust of wind or lack of ghee, due to which the devotees fear that something inauspicious might happen. Special rules and remedies have been given for this in astrology and Puranas.

Is it really inauspicious for the Akhand Jyoti to go out?

According to the scriptures, if the Akhand Jyoti gets extinguished inadvertently or due to some natural reason (like wind), then one should not panic considering it as a ‘crime’ or ‘inauspicious’. God is hungry for feelings, not just rules. Mother Durga never gets angry with her devotees for unintentional mistakes. However, deliberate negligence should be avoided.

What to do immediately if the light goes out? (classical solution)

If your Akhand Jyoti has gone out, the fault can be removed by following these 3 steps:

Apologize: First of all, with folded hands, mentally apologize to Goddess Durga for your mistake. Keep this feeling in your mind that “O Mother, this light has been extinguished due to ignorance, please forgive my crime.”

Rekindle: Relight the flame immediately. Keep in mind that before lighting the main flame, a small ‘Sakshi lamp’ should be lit, so that the order of the unbroken flame is maintained.

Chanting the propitiatory mantra: after lighting the flame ‘Om Dun Durgaayi Namah’ Or ‘Forgiveness Mantra’ Chant it 11 or 21 times. This provides peace of mind and the results of the worship also remain intact.

5 special tips to keep the eternal flame burning

Chimney: Be sure to use a glass cover to protect the flame from wind.

Light Selection: Always use long and Kalave (Mauli) wick, as it burns for a long time.

Ghee/Oil Level: While pouring ghee in the flame, keep in mind that it should not be filled till the top, otherwise the flame may sink and get extinguished.

Cleanliness: Carefully remove the carbon (flower) deposited on the wick so that the flame does not become moderate.

Sakshi Deepak: Whenever you have to change the wick of Akhand Jyoti or clean it, light a small lamp nearby so that ‘Jyoti Se Jyoti’ keeps burning.
