Scientists have found about 3.4 million years old leaves in the lysong rocks of Nagaland. These leaves are so well preserved that they opened the entire secret of the season of that era. When the researchers of Birbal Sahni Purchasion Institute (Lucknow) and Wadia Himalayan Geology (Dehradun) studied these leaves, they were shocked. The texture and size of the leaf showed that at that time there was more heat and moisture weather in Nagaland than today. There was so much rain that had grown so much.

This discovery became even more interesting when scientists found that the time of these leaves is exactly the same era when the huge snow sheets started for the first time in Antarctica.

This process pushed the intermediate conversion zone (ITCZ) i.e. the main strip of rain from the southern pole towards India. Due to this major change, the phase of heavy monsoon rains started in India and the Indian monsoon system developed. In the words, the snowfall of Antarctica gave India a monsoon gift.

Why warning for future?

This study not only tells the story of millions of years old, but also gives a warning for the coming tomorrow. Today, due to global warming, the ice of Antarctica is melting rapidly. Scientists fear that if this trend continues, history may repeat itself. Just as the rain strip came towards India due to the formation of snow, similarly this bandage can move again due to the melting of ice.
