New Zealand and Gujarat Titans all -rounder Glenn Philips has given their opinion on the IPL’s Impact Player Rules. He believes that this rule is currently proving beneficial for cricket, but in future the development of all -rounders can become an obstacle.

Significantly, there are different views on this rule, but the Cricket Board of India (BCCI) has decided to keep it in force till at least 2027.

How is the Impact Player Rules Sports Strategy Changing?

Advantage of Impact Player Rules

  • This gives teams a chance to feed an additional batsman or bowler.

  • The batting team already gets the freedom to take an aggressive stance.

  • The bowling team gets an option of an additional specialist bowler.

What did Glen Philips say?
Philips said in an interview to PTI,
“I am neither fully in its side nor in protest. It certainly gives teams a chance to adopt new strategies. But at some level it can exclude all -rounders from the game, which can affect international T20 and ODI matches.”

Is this rule a threat to all -rounders?

Rohit Sharma had already opposed this rule.

Hardik Pandya’s opinion:

  • He admitted that due to this rule, it could be difficult for young all -rounders to make it to the playing XI.

  • If there is no specialist like an all -rounder Hardik Pandya, it will be difficult to get a chance in the initial XI.

Glenn Philips also raised the issue.
They said,
“For now, this rule is making the game exciting, but it may need a change in future. I think the biggest advantage of the IPL is that it keeps changing the rules according to the atmosphere.”

Support for removal of saliva ban in IPL

Glenn Philips also supported the removal of saliva on ball before IPL 2025.

He said:
“Saliva can be used on ball this year, which will help reverse swing. If the batsmen are being given additional benefits, the bowlers should also get some help.”

What will be the change?

  • Now the bowlers will be able to use saliva to brighten the ball.

  • Reverse swing may be seen at the end of the innings.

  • The bowlers will help reduce the dominance of the batsmen.

BCCI’s two -year ban correct?

The BCCI has decided to ban a two -year ban on the launch of foreign players from the IPL at the last time.

Glenn Philips justified it.
They said,
“The BCCI had already warned the players that if they decide to play and move away at the last moment, they will be banned. The rules were already decided, so it is not a strict decision.”

Harry Brook’s case:

  • England batsman Harry Brook withdrew his name from the IPL at the last moment.

  • Now he has been banned from the IPL for the current and next season.

Glenn Philips said that if this rule had not been there, it would have been injustice to other players.

Will the Impact Player Rules change in future?

Currently, this rule is proving beneficial for teams.
But there can be a problem for all -rounders in future.
The IPL has been constantly changing the rules, so maybe something new will be seen about it.
