New York: Did you know that the home we consider the safest haven is the most dangerous and deadly place for thousands of women and girls around the world?
This is not a scary story, but the bitter truth of the figures released by the United Nations (UN), which can put any civilized society to shame. According to the latest UN report, every 10 minutes a woman or girl in the world is murdered by her own husband, lover or a family member.
Mirror of statistics: 137 murders in one day
This report shows that last year 83,000 women and girls were intentionally murdered around the world. But what is most heartbreaking is this:
- Of these, 60 percent i.e. 50,000 murders were committed by his own people.
- This means that every day an average of 137 women or girls are killed by their loved ones.
If we compare this with men, the picture appears completely opposite. Last year, only 11 percent of male murders were committed by someone close to them or a family member.
worst conditions in Africa
Women and girls face this brutal violence in every corner of the world, but the situation is worse in some areas:
- Africa: Here, per 1 lakh female population, 3 murders are committed by loved ones, which is the highest in the world.
- America: 1.5
- Oceania: 1.4
- Asia: 0.7
- Europe: 0.5
“The threat of online violence is also no less”
The UN has also expressed concern that the increasing violence in the digital world is no longer limited to ‘online’ only. “Online threats and violence are now spilling over into the ‘offline’ world and, in extreme cases, leading to the killing of women,” said Sarah Hendrix, Director of UN Women’s Policy Division.
This report sends a strong message that making laws alone is not enough to stop violence against women, but a major change is needed in social thinking and criminal justice system, so that home becomes a safe place for women and not a graveyard.
