Hindi is not just a language, it is our credibility, why does January 10th become special as World Hindi Day?

As soon as you wake up in the morning, you might have started receiving messages saying “Hindi Hai Hum” on your WhatsApp. But have you ever wondered why a date was recorded in the calendar in the name of ‘World Hindi Day’? It is not just a day of reciting poetry or writing essays in schools, but it is a celebration of the language that has now crossed the borders of India and stands firmly on the digital map of the world.

A little glimpse of history
It is the year 1975, when the first ‘World Hindi Conference’ was held in Nagpur. The aim was clear to bring Hindi on the world stage and not just confine it to our homes. Later, in the year 2006, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh decided to celebrate it officially every year. From then till today, every January 10, we express our gratitude to the crores of people across the world who keep Hindi in their hearts.

Hindi shines in 2026: Changing times, changing language
The theme of the year 2026 emphasizes how Hindi is no longer an ‘old-fashioned’ language, but is becoming the most preferred language of technology and the internet. Today you can clearly see the status of Hindi in every major social media platform, Google search and even in the dubbing versions of Hollywood films. Now people do not hesitate to speak Hindi, but see it as a ‘smart language’.

Often people get confused about this…
Many people ask that when we celebrate ‘Hindi Diwas’ on 14 September, then what is the use of 10 January? It is easy to understand – 14th September is the day to celebrate the adoption of Hindi within our country (India), whereas 10th January is the day to hoist the flag of Hindi in the ‘whole world’. It is a symbol of our diplomacy and soft power at the international level.

What should we do today?
Just posting a photo on Facebook or Instagram is not enough. The true tribute will be when we respect Hindi in our conversations, read Hindi writers and pass on this language to our future generations with the same purity. Be it the UN platform or a university in London, today there are queues of people learning Hindi everywhere.
