After the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola virus outbreak a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’, the Government of India has imposed strict security and vigilance measures across the country. After this global warning, health monitoring has been greatly strengthened in all the international airports and sensitive states of the country. In this sequence, the administration at Pune International Airport in Maharashtra has increased its preparations on war footing, so that the entry of this virus within the country can be stopped in time.

Soon after the high-level advisory issued by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Pune Airport Public Health Office (APHO) has imposed special protocols and strict rules. The security and surveillance system at the airport has been strengthened many times more than before. Now every international traveler coming from abroad has to undergo a mandatory health checkup (thermal screening). Airport officials say that if any passenger shows even the slightest suspicious symptoms related to Ebola virus during screening, he will be immediately handed over to the special medical team under the national health protocol, from where he will be sent for further intensive medical examination and isolation.

Amidst this global alert, a very shocking incident has come to light at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. During the examination of a Sudanese citizen who arrived here from abroad, initial symptoms like Ebola virus were found in him. As soon as the medical team got wind of this, without wasting any time the passenger was immediately shifted to a special isolation center as a precautionary measure. Initial travel history investigation revealed that this passenger had recently traveled to African countries, especially South Sudan and Uganda. Health officials are now waiting for his report with utmost caution and other people who came in contact with him are also being identified.

Alert in Durg and Bhilai of Chhattisgarh, 3 people returned from African countries, home isolated for 21 days

Along with airports, now the threat of Ebola is also looming in the interior parts of the country. The identification of three suspected cases related to Ebola infection in Durg district of Chhattisgarh has created a stir in the local administration. According to information received from the Health Department, out of these three suspects, two are residents of Bhilai, while one person is a resident of Durg area. It is a matter of relief that at present no serious or fatal symptoms of Ebola have been found in any of these patients.

Since all three citizens have recently returned to India from a tour of African countries, following the medical protocol, the District Health Department has instructed all three to remain in strict ‘home isolation’ for the next 21 days. Special teams of Durg District Health Department are continuously monitoring the health of these three citizens 24 hours so that any emergency situation can be dealt with immediately.
