Heavy landslide in Keralam: Engine of Bilaspur-Tirunelveli Express derailed near Parasala, six trains canceled and many routes diverted.

A big and worrying news is coming out from Kerala, which is one of the beautiful and sensitive states of South India towards natural disasters. Railway traffic has been badly affected due to a sudden massive landslide in the early hours of Thursday near Parasala railway station in Thiruvananthapuram district, the capital of Kerala. The engine of Bilaspur-Tirunelveli Express suddenly derailed due to heavy rains and mud slides from the hill slopes. After this accident, there was panic in the Southern Railway administration and as a precaution, trains on many important routes had to be canceled with immediate effect. Let us know in detail what is the complete timeline of this accident that happened in Thiruvananthapuram and what steps the Railways is taking for the convenience of the passengers.

Heavy rains and landslides wreak havoc in Thiruvananthapuram: Train engine derails

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Kerala and orange alert was also declared for Thiruvananthapuram. Due to continuous torrential rains for the last few days, life has become disrupted.

Amidst this disaster, a sudden landslide occurred near Parasala railway station at around 2:19 am on Thursday. Debris and rocks from the hilly part fell directly on the railway track. Meanwhile, Bilaspur-Tirunelveli Express passing through there had to be stopped as a precaution. Soon after the train stopped, the engine of that train derailed due to track subsidence. The fortunate thing is that this accident did not turn into a major fatal accident and the train was stopped in time.

All passengers and railway employees safe, relief work underway

Immediately after this horrific accident, the railway officials and the local administration showed promptness and started relief and rescue operations. In the official statement issued by Southern Railway, it has been informed that at the time of this accident, all the passengers traveling in the train and all the railway employees are completely safe. There is no news of any casualty or serious injury to any passenger, which has given great relief to the administration and family members.

A relief locomotive and an accident relief train were immediately sent to the spot to help the passengers. The work of removing the derailed engine and repairing the track is going on war footing, so that the railway operations can be normalized as soon as possible.

Train stopped in Neyyattinkara, buses arranged for passengers

After the incident, the affected train has been stopped at Neyyattinkara and has not been allowed to travel further at present. To reduce the problems of stranded passengers, the railway administration has made alternative arrangements and sent them to their destination through buses and other special trains.

Apart from this, for the convenience of passengers, Railways has also issued some helpline numbers, by contacting which the latest information about the status and timing of trains can be obtained:

Six passenger trains completely cancelled, timings of many changed

Keeping in mind the damage caused to railway tracks due to landslides and safety reasons, Railways has completely or partially canceled many important trains running today.

  • Canceled trains: A total of six passenger trains including Thiruvananthapuram North-Nagercoil Junction Passenger, Nagercoil Junction-Kollam Junction Passenger, Nagercoil Junction-Thiruvananthapuram North Passenger, and Kollam Junction-Nagercoil Junction Passenger have been completely canceled for today.

  • Change in time: The timing of Kanyakumari-Mangaluru Central Parashuram Express, which departs from Kanyakumari at 3:45 am, has been changed, and now this train will leave for its destination at 7:00 am.

Meteorological Department’s warning and further alerts

In view of the seriousness of the situation, the Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for many parts of Keralam between October 22 and October 25. During this period, there is a possibility of torrential rains and landslides in coastal and hilly areas. The administration has appealed to the people to avoid unnecessary traveling and completely follow the guidelines of the Meteorological Department. A team of railway employees is busy repairing the track and traffic is expected to resume soon.
