Captain Harmanpreet Singh, who won the hockey team’s second consecutive medal at the Paris Olympics, and high jumper Praveen Kumar, who won the gold medal at the Paralympics, have been nominated for India’s highest sporting honour, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Paris Olympics medalist shooter Swapnil Kusale and wrestler Aman Sehrawat have been nominated for the Arjuna Award, but Manu Bhaker, India’s woman shooter who won two medals in shooting events at the Paris Olympics, has not been nominated.
It is believed that Manu has not applied for Khelratna but the Sports Ministry and the National Rifle Shooting Association have not taken any action in his name. Last year, the ministry had personally presented the Arjuna Award to cricketer Mohammed Shami. Manu’s father Ramkishan Bhakar told that Manu has applied for Khel Ratna. On the other hand, NRAI President Kalikesh said that it is the responsibility of the athletes to send names or apply for the award. We have requested the Sports Ministry to nominate Manu for Khel Ratna as we have not seen his name in the list. The 12-member awards committee headed by Ramasubramaniam has recommended seven Paris Olympics medalists (five from hockey) and 17 Paris Paralympic medalists for the Arjuna Award. A total of 30 players will be given Arjun Award. Para swimmer Padmashree Murlikant Petkar, the country’s first Paralympic medalist, has been nominated for the Lifetime Arjuna Award.
Four names have been recommended for the regular category of Dronacharya Award and two for the lifetime category. These also include parachuting coach Subhash Rana, para athletic coach Amit Saroha. The ministry has also expressed opposition to the name of Saroha, who is also playing as a player.
