Today the holy festival of Kartik Purnima is being celebrated all over the country. Best wishes to all of you on this holy day! The morning of this day is special, when people feel blessed by taking a dip in the Ganga or any holy river. Our elders say that by taking bath, donating and worshiping on this day, one gets the benefits of all the Purnima of the year together.

This day is very special for both Lord Vishnu and Bholenath. It is believed that on this day Lord Vishnu saved the universe by taking the form of a fish (Matsya Avatar). At the same time, on this day, Lord Shiva had destroyed the demon named Tripurasura and freed the gods and humans from his fear.

In joy of this victory, all the gods came to earth and lit countless lamps on the banks of Ganga. Since then the tradition of celebrating this day as ‘Dev Diwali’ has been going on. Besides, today the birth anniversary of the first Guru of Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev Ji is also celebrated.

It is said that on this most sacred day of the year, some things should be kept in mind, so that there is peace and happiness in the house and the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi are always showered. Let us know what those things are:

  • Do not pluck basil leaves: It is not considered good to pluck basil leaves on the day of Kartik Purnima. Tulsi ji is considered to be the form of Goddess Lakshmi and troubling her on this day can make Goddess Lakshmi angry, which can affect the prosperity of the house.
  • Do not let there be darkness in the house: It is believed that on the night of Kartik Purnima, the gods come to visit the earth. Therefore, no corner of the house should be kept dark on this day. Try to have light in every room.
  • Do not give these things to anyone: Kartik Purnima is directly related to the Moon. In astrology, milk and silver are considered symbols of the moon. Therefore, one should not donate milk, silver or any white colored thing to anyone today. It is believed that this can increase the Moon defect in the horoscope.
  • Eat simple food: This day is very sacred, hence a virtuous atmosphere should be maintained in the house. Even if you have not observed a fast, it is better to avoid things like meat, fish, eggs, garlic and onion on this day.
  • Do not return anyone empty handed: If a needy or an elderly person comes to your door today, do not return him empty handed. According to your capacity, give him something to eat, donate food or fruits. By doing this one gets virtue and prosperity comes to the house.
