Grand alert of torrential rains in 14 states on August 21: Flood warning in many places including UP, MP and Uttarakhand

The active monsoon season continues with full intensity across the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a mega-alert of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in more than 14 states of North, Central, East and Northeast India on August 21. Due to the low pressure area arising from the Bay of Bengal and the cyclonic circulation over north-east Madhya Pradesh, the monsoon trough line is passing through normal conditions, due to which the series of thunderstorms, lightning and torrential rainfall has intensified on a wide scale. Meteorologists have advised citizens to remain alert in view of the possibility of waterlogging in sensitive areas, rise in the water level of rivers and landslides in hilly states.

Alert of heavy to very heavy rain in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh

According to the forecast of the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of torrential rain with strong thunderstorms and lightning in the western and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh on August 21. The administration has been instructed to exercise special vigilance in the districts adjoining Bundelkhand and Terai belt. At the same time, an orange alert of ‘very heavy rainfall’ has been issued in the eastern and northern divisions of Madhya Pradesh like Rewa, Sagar, Jabalpur, Gwalior and Chambal regions. Due to continuous rains, the water level of Betwa, Chambal and Narmada is increasing, due to which the risk of flood-like situation in the low-lying areas has increased.

Danger of landslides and cloudburst in hilly states

Monsoon rains are becoming a disaster in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert of heavy rain in many districts of Uttarakhand including Dehradun, Nainital, Chamoli, Pauri and Uttarkashi. Due to continuous torrential rains in Kullu, Kangra, Shimla and Mandi of Himachal Pradesh, many connectivity roads and national highways have been disrupted. In view of the danger of landslides on hill slopes and flash floods in rivers and streams, the local administration has given strict instructions to tourists and local residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from river banks.

Lightning warning in Bihar, Jharkhand and north-eastern states

The weather patterns in the states of Eastern India have also deteriorated. Orange alert of severe thunderstorm and lightning has been declared in Seemanchal and north-eastern districts of Bihar – Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar. There are chances of torrential rains in many parts of Jharkhand and Odisha. On the other hand, due to continuously active monsoon in North-East Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, the water level of Brahmaputra and its tributaries is approaching the danger mark, due to which flood control rooms have been kept on 24-hour alert mode.

There will be heavy rain in Maharashtra, Gujarat and coastal areas

In Western India, intermittent heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over the coastal areas of Konkan and Goa as well as the Ghats areas of Central Maharashtra. Disaster management teams have been deployed to deal with waterlogging situations in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad. On the other hand, parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala of South Peninsular India will also continue to see moderate to heavy rains with movement of clouds.
