News India Live, Digital Desk: The cases of fraud are increasing every day in the internet world, but this time Google has taken a big step against these fraudsters. Google has filed a big lawsuit against some hackers sitting in China, who victimized millions of people across the world and committed fraud worth billions of rupees. This gang of hackers was running a platform named “Lighthouse”, which worked on the ‘Phishing-as-a-Service’ model.
How did this network of fraud work?
This network sold ready-made tools and fake website kits to people who did not have much understanding of technology. By paying a small fee, these people used to get access to thousands of fake website templates, domain names and payment gateways. After this, these fraudsters used to send text messages (SMS) or emails to people, in which it was often written that one of your packages is pending or toll tax payment is pending.
As soon as a person clicked on the link given in this message, he would reach a fake website, which looked absolutely real. These websites were often copies of Google, Gmail or any bank page. People would unknowingly enter their bank details or passwords there and all their personal information would be stolen.
Targeted using Google’s name
The most shocking thing is that these hackers used Google’s own logo and brands to deceive people. They created more than 100 such fake websites which had the logos of Google, YouTube and Gmail so that people could easily trust them. This network targeted more than 10 lakh people in more than 120 countries of the world and it is estimated that a total fraud of more than 1 billion dollars has been done.
What will be the impact of Google’s legal action?
Google has filed a case against these hackers under America’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. This is a strict law usually used to combat organized crime. The purpose of this legal action is not only to punish these hackers, but also to destroy their entire network. Although it is believed that it will be very difficult to present these Chinese hackers in the American court, but this initiative of Google will definitely send a strong message to such fraudulent gangs around the world.
