In Sanatan Hindu religion, service to parents and ancestors is considered very important not only while they are alive, but also after their death. For this, the rules of Pind Daan, Tarpan and Shraddha rituals have been mentioned in the scriptures. It is clearly mentioned in the great text ‘Garuda Purana’ that after death the soul assumes a subtle body.
This subtle soul gets ultimate satisfaction and salvation only through the Pind Daan and Shraddha performed by the family members. Garuda Purana warns that if the relatives of a deceased person do not perform these necessary religious rituals, then the helpless soul has to suffer terrible hardships in the afterlife, which has a direct and extremely bad impact on the living family as well. Let us know what troubles the soul has to suffer if Pind Daan is not performed:
1. The soul yearns, has to endure the severe pain of hunger and thirst.
According to Garuda Purana, when the physical body of a human being merges into the five elements, then the soul comes into subtle form. In this condition, he does not get food, water or normal food like us. On the way to Yamalok, the soul, troubled by hunger and thirst, gets nourishment only from sesame seeds, water and Pinda (grain balls) given by the family members. If these actions are not performed, the soul is forced to wander here and there in restlessness, tormented by terrible hunger and thirst.
2. The path to salvation is closed, the soul gets trapped in the ghostly form.
According to the scriptures, in case of non-receipt of Pind Daan, the further divine journey of the soul stops completely. She is unable to step on the path of salvation or next birth and ultimately Phantom Vagina (Negative vagina). Souls with such unfulfilled desires and unsatisfied deeds keep wandering in the atmosphere of the earth. In Garuda Purana, this is considered to be the most tragic situation, because the soul is unable to help its own family even after seeing them in pain.
3. There are terrible obstacles in the scary journey to Yamalok.
After death, to reach the court of Yamraj, the soul has to pass through a 86 thousand yojana long and extremely difficult path. The Shraddha and monthly Pind Daan performed by the family members from time to time provides immense strength and support to the soul to move forward in this journey. Garuda Purana says that the souls who do not have anyone to follow them to perform Pind Daan, become extremely weak on the way and have to face dreadful attacks and tortures from other ghosts on the way.
4. The soul feels extremely helpless even while living among loved ones.
The souls who remain dissatisfied due to Shraddha not being performed, keep hovering in and around their own family’s house out of attachment. They can hear everything about their loved ones, can see them, but are not able to establish any physical contact or communication with them even if they want to. This helplessness is as painful for the soul as going through hell. Such spirits often try to give signals to their family members through dreams or through some unusual events happening in the house that measures for their salvation should be taken.
5. ‘Pitra Dosh’ bites the living family, happiness and peace gets shattered
The unsatisfied and unhappy souls of their ancestors, despite their unwillingness to ancestral defect Become the cause. It is clearly written in Garuda Purana that the family whose ancestors are hungry, thirsty and dissatisfied can never be blessed. Causes of Pitra Dosh:
-
There is an atmosphere of unnecessary discord and unrest in the house all the time.
-
Despite hard work, the situation of financial crisis and huge debt persists.
-
The growth of offspring stops, happiness of children is hindered or marriageable children are not able to have relationships.
-
Serious and mysterious diseases afflict the family members.
What is the real importance of Shraddha?
Shraddha is not a superstition or just a traditional ritual, rather it is a medium to express respect, gratitude and duty towards one’s ancestors. According to Garuda Purana, a person who performs Shraddha and Tarpan of his ancestors with full devotion and strength, gets the blessings of his ancestors, due to which there is never any shortage of money, grains and happiness in his life.
