England’s Dicky Bird, considered one of the most famous and best umpires in cricket history, has passed away. He was 92 years old. England’s County Club Yorkshire announced the death of the bird in a statement. After umpiring in about 150 international matches, bird was the first umpire to create his own identity in history and popularize the profession of umpiring. The England Cricket Board has also mourned the death of the bird. Before becoming an international umpire, Bird was also a first class cricketer, but at the age of 32 he retired.

Bird died at his home on Tuesday, 23 September at the age of 92. The County Club announced the death of Bird who played first class cricket for Yorkshire. Yorkshire said in a statement, “Yorkshire County Cricket Club, one of the most loved persons in the cricket world, is very sad to announce the death of Herold Dennis ‘Dicky’ Bird.”
Career was not successful as a cricketer
Born on April 19, 1933, Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, the full name of Bird was Herold Dennis Bird, but worldwide he became known as Dicky Bird. He started his first class cricket career with Yorkshire, but he never got any special success on a 22 -yard pitch. The right -handed batsman, Bird played for Yorkshire for three years before playing four seasons for Leistershire, but there was no change in his luck there, due to which he retired from cricket at the age of 32. Bird scored only 3,314 runs in 93 first -class matches.
Luck changed as an umpire became
But from here his career took a new turn when he tried his hand in umpiring. At the age of just 37, he umpiring in his first county championship match in 1970 and shortly after that he also started umpiring in Test cricket. His Test umpiring career began in 1973 with the Leeds Test match between England and New Zealand and until 1996 he was one of the most famous umpires in the world. He last umpiring in the Lord’s Test match between India and England in 1996. During this match, they were also given Guard of Honor by both teams.
Umpireing in three World Cup finals
Bird was the first umpire to umpiring in the three World Cup finals. He was a field umpire in the first three World Cup finals played in 1975, 1979 and 1983. In the third final, which was also his last final, Kapil Dev -led Indian team won the World Cup Trophy for the first time by defeating two -time champions West Indies.
