Today the whole country is talking about this city because here Prime Minister Narendra Modi have arrived and ‘Laksh Kanth Geeta Recitation’ (Gita recitation by one lakh people) is being organised. Imagine, what will be the atmosphere there when one lakh voices simultaneously recite the verses of ‘Bhagavad Gita’!

But, do you know that PM Modi has seen Lord Krishna here not from directly in front, but from a small window? Yes, there is a hair-raising story behind this.

Lord Krishna’s back? how come?
Generally, if you go to any temple in the world, the face of God is towards the east and you get darshan from the front. But in Shri Krishna Math of Udupi, the face of the Lord is towards the West and the devotees have darshan of Him by peeping through a window with nine holes.

this window ‘Kanakana Kindi’ They say.

That insistence of devotee Kanakdas
The matter is centuries old. became a great devotee KanakdasHe was a great fan of Lord Krishna, It was true that he came to Udupi, but because of the hierarchy and caste system of that time, the priests did not allow him to enter the temple, He was pushed out,

Kanakdas’s heart is broken, but his faith is not. He sat in the backyard of the temple and started calling God with his veena. All he was singing was, “O Krishna, if you are there, please appear to me.”

…and a miracle happened!
It is said that Kanakdas’ call was so true that the back stone wall of the temple got cracked. And not only this, the idol of Krishna which was looking towards the east, moved on its own to give darshan to his devotee Kanakdas. Turned towards the west!

The Lord appeared to Kanakdas through that crack (which later became a window). When the priests saw this miracle, they were stunned. He honored the place and named it ‘Kanakan Khindi’.

The tradition continues even today
Even today, hundreds of years later, the tradition remains the same. Be it a common man or the Prime Minister of the country, everyone has to have darshan of Lord Krishna from the same ‘window’. Today, when PM Modi paid obeisance there, the same historical story came alive again.

This temple of Udupi is not just a place of faith, it is a proof that for God there is no rich, no poor, no caste – only ’emotion’ is seen there.

So next time whenever you plan to go to Karnataka, do not forget to go to Udupi and peep from that window, where God is still waiting for his devotee.
