News India Live, Digital Desk: On the night of 2nd December last year, the earth suddenly trembled strongly near the southern Mindanao Islands of the Philippines. The time was around 10:37 pm, when a powerful earthquake of 7.4 magnitude occurred. This earthquake was so strong that it frightened people. Its epicenter was at a depth of about 25 to 32 kilometers in the sea near Hinatuan municipality of Surigao del Sur.
Immediately after the earthquake, the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issued a tsunami warning asking people especially in coastal areas of Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental to immediately evacuate to higher ground. After this warning, thousands of people left their homes and took shelter in safe places. There was a fear of tsunami waves in Japan too, due to which people were asked to remain alert in many coastal areas there.
The good thing is that the major danger of tsunami was averted. The following day, at approximately 3:23 a.m. on December 3, PHIVOLCS withdrew the tsunami warning. Although waves up to 2 meters high were observed off the coast of Hinatuan, damage was less than expected.
After this earthquake, many small and big shocks, which are called aftershocks, also kept coming. More than 700 aftershocks were recorded, some of which were of magnitude up to 6.5. Due to these tremors, some houses and buildings were damaged, and the death of one person was also reported. Electricity supply was also disrupted. But, the biggest thing was that people remained alert and went to safe places on time, due to which major loss of life and property was avoided.
This incident reminds us how powerful nature is and we should always be prepared for such emergencies.
