When is Dussehra in 2025?

According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Dussehra is celebrated every year on the Dashami date of the Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month.

  • In the year 2025, Dashami Tithi will start on 1 October, Wednesday at 12:47 pm.
  • This date will remain the next day, ie October 2, Thursday till 01:42 pm.

Since any festival in Hinduism is celebrated on the basis of Udaya Tithi (when sunrise), therefore The festival of Vijayadashami i.e. Dussehra will be celebrated on 2 October 2025, Thursday.

Auspicious time of worship

On this day, Vijay Muhurta is considered best for weapon worship and other auspicious works.

  • Vijay Muhurta: October 2 will be from 01:25 pm to 02:11 pm.
  • In the afternoon worship time: From 12:38 pm to 02:58 pm.

Why is Dussehra celebrated?

There are two great mythological stories from this one day:

  1. Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana: It is believed that on this day Lord Rama killed the king of Lanka, the egoistic Ravana and freed Mother Sita from her imprisonment. This day is a symbol of the end of evil, that is why effigies of Ravana are burnt on this day.
  2. Maa Durga’s victory over Mahishasura: According to another legend, on the same day, Mother Durga killed a demon named Mahishasura after the battle lasted for nine days. For this reason, it is called Vijayadashami and this day is also a symbol of the power and victory of Mother Durga.

On this day, it is also considered very auspicious to worship weapons, start new work and buy a car or gold. This day teaches us that no matter how powerful evil is, in the end victory is always of good and truth.
