Why is Dussehra celebrated?
There are two great mythological stories from this one day:
- Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana: It is believed that on this day Lord Rama killed the king of Lanka, the egoistic Ravana and freed Mother Sita from her imprisonment. This day is a symbol of the end of evil, that is why effigies of Ravana are burnt on this day.
- Maa Durga’s victory over Mahishasura: According to another legend, on the same day, Mother Durga killed a demon named Mahishasura after the battle lasted for nine days. For this reason, it is called Vijayadashami and this day is also a symbol of the power and victory of Mother Durga.
