News India Live, Digital Desk: The deepening war clouds in West Asia have now broken the back of Indian fishermen and the country’s coastal economy. The war that broke out between Iran and Israel has had a direct impact on thousands of Indian fishermen who used to venture into the seas of Gulf countries in search of livelihood. Due to the war, the boats of Indian fishermen have been left stranded on the coasts of Iran, which has not only put their lives at risk but has also dealt a major blow to India’s seafood exports.

Silence in the sea: boats lying abandoned on the shores of Iran

Tension has increased so much in Iran and surrounding maritime areas that fishing has come to a complete halt. According to the report, in view of the war situation, Iran has imposed strict restrictions to secure its ports and maritime borders. Due to this, hundreds of boats of Indian fishermen have been parked on the shores. The owners of these boats and the employees working on them are now becoming desperate for every penny. Many fishermen have sent messages to their families that they are stranded there and are not in a position to return due to lack of fuel and ration.

Deep impact on India’s maritime economy

Iran and Gulf countries have been major centers of seafood export for India. This war has completely disrupted the supply chain. Experts believe that due to closure of ports and halt in movement of ships, India’s maritime trade is facing losses worth crores of rupees. Especially those families in the coastal areas of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat who were dependent on the earnings of fishermen working in the Gulf countries are now in deep economic crisis.

Increasing demand for rescue operation and government efforts

The families of the stranded fishermen have appealed to the Government of India to bring back their loved ones safely as soon as possible. Although the Government of India has so far evacuated many citizens, the situation regarding fishermen and their means of employment (boats) still remains challenging. The Ministry of External Affairs is keeping a close watch on the situation and is trying to find a safe route through international corridors.
