New Delhi. Whether going on a holiday or traveling to another city for some important work, the first thing most of us do as soon as we get a hotel room is lie down on the bed or start unpacking our luggage. But do you know that this carelessness can become the biggest threat to your security and privacy? Nowadays, incidents like hidden cameras, broken locks and open wires are increasing rapidly in hotel rooms. Therefore, the next time you step into a hotel, do these 8 things first.

Check the door deadbolt and peephole first

Close the door as soon as you enter the room and check the deadbolt lock properly. Also check the peephole on the door because if it is broken or has paper stuck in it, then someone from outside can see your actions. If you see anything like this, immediately complain to the reception.

Find hidden cameras, smartphone will become a weapon

Cases of hidden cameras in hotel rooms are now becoming common. Check the TV set-top box, smoke detector, AC vent, wall clock and mirror carefully. Check dark corners and mirrors by lighting your smartphone’s flashlight. The camera lens shines in light and captures instantly.

Window and balcony door are equally important

Just focusing on the main door is not enough. Be sure to check whether the balcony door is locking properly from inside or not. If your room is on the ground floor or lower floor, then this check becomes even more important because infiltration is easiest from here.

Don’t forget to look under cupboards, curtains and beds too.

This may sound filmy but it is very important from security point of view. Take a look in the washroom, inside cupboards, behind curtains and under the bed to make sure there is no one already hidden in the room and no suspicious items left behind.

Check landline phone, it will be useful in emergency.

If any sudden trouble arises at night and the mobile network does not support you, then the hotel’s landline will be your most reliable ally. As soon as you enter the room, pick up the receiver and check the tone and dial the reception number once.

See the emergency exit map, if there is a fire then you will not have to wander.

Carefully read the emergency exit map placed behind the door which we often ignore. This map tells you where the nearest exit is in case of fire or other emergency. In trouble, this map can save your life.

If the electronic safe is already locked, get it reset.

Before keeping passport, laptop or valuable jewelery in the hotel safe, check that it is not already locked. If the safe is already locked, it means that a previous guest had left it locked. Immediately get it reset by reception and set your new code.

Also avoid broken sockets and open wires

Security is not only from thieves but also from accidents. Be sure to check the electrical sockets and wires. If there is any bare wire near the hair dryer or geyser in the bathroom, it can be fatal. If you notice any such defect, ask for change of room without any delay.
