Tulsi leaves are prohibited in Shiva worship
In Sanatan Dharma, Tulsi is considered very sacred and its use is mandatory in the worship of many gods and goddesses including Lord Vishnu. But the use of Tulsi Dal in the worship of Lord Shiva is completely prohibited. According to mythology, when Lord Shiva killed the tyrannical demon Jalandhar, his wife Vrinda got angry and cursed Lord Shiva that Tulsi would never be used in his worship. That is why offering Tulsi on Shivling is prohibited.
Do not offer vermilion, kumkum and roli even by mistake.
In Hindu religion, vermillion, roli and kumkum are considered symbols of good luck and are mainly used in the worship of goddesses. At the same time, the scriptures tell that Shivling is a symbol of male element and renunciation. Therefore, offering vermilion or kumkum to Lord Shiva is considered prohibited. To please Lord Bholenath, one should always offer white sandalwood or ashes.
Avoid offering coconut water
Often people offer whole coconut in the worship of Lord Shiva, which is auspicious. But offering coconut water on Shivalinga is prohibited in the scriptures. Coconut is called ‘Shriphal’, which is considered to be the form of Goddess Lakshmi. The rule is that things offered to Lord Shiva are not accepted as Prasad, hence even coconut water is not offered on Shivalinga.
Offering broken rice is inauspicious.
Lord Shiva is very fond of rice i.e. ‘Akshat’. But special care should be taken that the rice offered to Shivalinga should not be broken or fragmented at all. Lord Shiva is considered a symbol of perfection and infinity, hence he is always offered complete and intact. Offering broken and intact worship does not yield auspicious results.
Shiva gets angry with Ketaki flower
According to mythology, once there was a dispute between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu regarding superiority. Then a huge Jyotirlinga appeared there. Lord Brahma falsely claimed to have seen the end of that Jyotirlinga and the Ketaki flower supported him in this lie. Angered by this, Lord Shiva cursed Ketaki that Ketaki flower would never be used in his worship.
