News India Live, Digital Desk: The festival of Chaitra Navratri is a symbol of reverence and purity. During Chaitra Navratri in the year 2026, devotees observe fast and decorate Mata’s post. But do you know that some special actions are strictly prohibited during these 9 days? According to astrology and Puranas, if you do these prohibited activities, your worship will not yield full results and poverty may come to the house.
1. Prohibition of cutting hair and nails
Shaving, cutting hair and cutting nails are completely prohibited during Navratri.
Religious reasons: Mundan or cutting of hair is a rite of passage in Hinduism which is avoided on auspicious occasions. Navratri is a time of self-restraint, hence cutting body parts is considered inauspicious.
Recognition: It is believed that cutting hair or nails during these days angers Goddess Durga and may disturb the peace and happiness of the house.
2. Take care of purity in eating habits
One should completely stay away from Tamasic food during Navratri.
Forbidden things: Do not consume meat, fish, egg, onion and garlic even by mistake.
Satvik diet: Even if you are not fasting, you should still prepare only satvik food at home. Consumption of alcohol and other intoxicants is considered equivalent to insulting the mother.
3. Do not use leather items
Leather items like belts, purses or shoes should not be used during puja or while going to the temple. Leather is made from animal skin, which is considered impure.
4. Avoid sleeping and discord during the day
According to Vishnu Purana: A person observing fast should not sleep during the day.
Behaviour: During these days, do not abuse anyone, do not insult anyone and do not allow any trouble in the house. Mother resides only in a peaceful environment.
5. Leaving unbroken light and empty house
If you have lit ‘Akhand Jyoti’ or installed ‘Kalash Sthapana’ in the house, then never leave the house locked. It is mandatory for some member of the family to be there.
