News India Live, Digital Desk: Pitru Paksha 2025: The time to express respect and reverence for his ancestors, Pitrupaksha is going to start soon. These 15-16 days have been considered very important in Hinduism. It is believed that during this time our ancestors come to the earth and expect food and water from their family members. That is why Shraddha, Tarpan and Donation have special significance in these days so that the souls of the ancestors get peace and their blessings remain on the family.
Pitrupaksha is not only a religious ritual, but also a time of restraint and discipline. During this time some special rules have been made regarding food and drink. According to the scriptures, eating some vegetables and foods is considered to be completely forbidden. It is said that by consuming these things, the ancestors may get angry and the person may have to be a part of Pitra dosha.
Let’s know about the 5 major vegetables that you should keep away from your kitchen during Pitrupaksha.
1. Garlic and onion
Garlic and onion are placed in the category of tamasic food. Their effect is hot and they can create excitement and impure thoughts in the person’s mind. Because Pitrupaksha is a time of reverence and sattvikta, the consumption of these two things is completely forbidden in the food of worship and Shraddha.
2. Radish
Radish grows inside the ground and is considered impure. Also, its effect is also cold and it can cause many types of defects. This is the reason that radish is not used in food to be fed to Brahmins during food or Shraddha Karma that is offered to the ancestors.
3. Brinjal
Brinjal is also considered Rajoguni and impure in the scriptures. According to some beliefs, it also has more insects. It is not considered auspicious for food made for fathers. Therefore, eating brinjal should be avoided during Shraddha Paksha.
4. Arabic and Jimikand (Suran)
Both these vegetables also grow under the ground and are considered to be impure. These vegetables should not be used in the food of Shraddha Karma. The food to be offered to the fathers should be completely sattvic and pure, so it is better to distance away from these vegetables.
5. Lentil dal
Apart from vegetables, eating lentils in pulses is strictly forbidden in Pitrupaksha. Its relationship is believed to be with Mars which brings fierceness in nature. Shraddha karma requires peace and gentleness, so the use of lentil dal is considered inauspicious.
Then what to eat?
In Pitrupaksha, you can consume sattvic vegetables like gourd, luffa, sitaphal (pumpkin), cucumber, potato and parwal.
In this Pitrupaksha, by taking care of these small things, you will not only be able to respect the ancestors, but will also be able to bring happiness, peace and prosperity in your life with their blessings.
