Desk jobs pose a risk of hemorrhoids: Cases have risen by 60%, so those who sit all day should be careful. Danger of ‘piles’ in desk job: Cases have increased by 60%, people who sit all day beware

Modern working style and desk job has made our work easier but has also created serious challenges for health. According to the latest reports and warnings from health experts, there has been a huge increase of up to 60% in the cases of piles (hemorrhoids) among young professionals working in the IT sector and corporate world. Experts consider this to be a direct result of ‘sedentary lifestyle’.

Why is danger increasing among office workers?

According to Dr. Kiran Kumar Jadhav, General Surgeon, Apollo Spectra, Pune, working sitting at one place for 8 to 10 hours every day puts constant pressure on the nerves of the anal area. This pressure itself gives rise to the problem of piles. Along with this, lack of water (dehydration), lack of fiber in the diet and excessive consumption of junk food increases this risk manifold. The shocking thing is that 6 out of every 10 employees aged 30 to 45 years are approaching doctors with complaints like discomfort and pain in the rectum.

If you have these symptoms then be alert

Often people ignore the initial signs of piles considering them minor, which can later lead to anemia or severe pain. Never take these symptoms lightly:

  • Constant itching and discomfort in the rectum.

  • Feeling pain or extreme discomfort during bowel movements.

  • Bright red blood in stool.

  • Feeling of not completely emptying the stomach even after going to the toilet (incomplete bowel movement).

Make these changes in lifestyle for protection

Doctors believe that conditions like piles can be prevented only by slightly improving your habits:

  • Fiber rich diet: Include more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and salads in your diet. Stay away from spicy and canned foods.

  • Adequate intake of water: Drink enough water throughout the day, which is the biggest weapon in keeping constipation away.

  • Take breaks in between: Get up from your chair every hour, take a walk or stretch. This improves blood circulation and reduces pressure on the veins.

  • Response at the right time: Whenever you feel the urge to defecate, do not postpone it.

Delay in treatment can be costly

Dr. Jadhav warns that ignoring the symptoms can make the problem worse, but don’t panic. Presently there has been a lot of progress in medical science and many ‘Minimally Invasive Procedures’ are available, due to which the patient gets very quick recovery. If you are feeling any of the early symptoms given above, consult a specialist immediately. Remember, small precautions can save you from major complications.
