New Delhi, 07 August (HS). Indian female wrestler Vinesh Phogat is out of Paris Olympics 2024. She was to play the final match of the 50 kg weight category of women's wrestling but she has been disqualified before the final match due to overweight. With the Indian wrestler being out, the luck of Cuban wrestler Yusnelis Guzman Lopez has opened up. Now she will play in place of Vinesh Phogat against America's Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the women's wrestling 50 kg weight category. Lopez was defeated 5-0 by Indian wrestler Vinesh in the semi-finals.
The Paris Olympic Organizing Committee said in a statement that Vinesh was found unfit in the weigh-in conducted on the second day. According to Section 11 of the International Wrestling Rules, Vinesh will be replaced by the wrestler whom she defeated in the semi-finals. For this reason, Cuba's Yusnelis Guzman Lopez will compete in the gold medal match. Along with this, it was said that the bronze medal match will be between Japan's Yui Susaki and Ukraine's Oksana Livach.
Earlier, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had said that with great regret the Indian team is sharing the news of Vinesh Phogat being disqualified from the women's wrestling 50 kg category. Despite the best efforts made by the team overnight, her weight was a few grams more than 50 kg this morning. No further comment will be made by the team at this time. The Indian team requests you to respect Vinesh's privacy. It is worth noting that the final match will be played late at 12:30 am (August 8).
