Something similar is happening this year on one of the most sacred festivals of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Jayanti i.e. Prakash Parv. There is confusion among people whether this festival will be celebrated on 4th November or 5th November.

Why is there this confusion?

All this confusion is regarding the timing of Purnima Tithi of Kartik month. The festival of Guru Nanak Jayanti is always celebrated on Kartik Purnima. According to the calendar this year:

• full moon date is starting – November 4, 2025, from 10:36 pm on Tuesday night.
• full moon date is coming to an end – 5 November 2025, Wednesday evening at 06:48 pm.

Now you can see that the full moon date is divided into these two dates (4th and 5th November). This is where all the confusion starts.

Then what is the correct date?

The answer to this lies in a very simple and straightforward rule given in our scriptures, which is called the rule of ‘Udaya Tithi’. According to this rule, any festival is celebrated on the day on which that tithi is present at the time of sunrise.

Since when sunrise occurs on November 4, it will be Chaturdashi Tithi and when sunrise occurs on November 5, it will be Purnima Tithi. so, According to the scriptures, it is correct to celebrate the Prakash Parv of Guru Nanak Jayanti in the year 2025 on Wednesday, 5th November.

How is Guru Parb celebrated?

The celebration of Prakash Parv starts several days in advance.

• The continuous recitation of Guru Granth Sahib begins in Gurudwaras two days before the festival.
• A day before, a city kirtan or a grand procession is taken out under the supervision of Panj Pyaras.
• On the day of Jayanti, there are Shabad-Kirtans in Gurudwaras from morning till night, the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji are remembered and huge langars are organised, where everyone sits together and eats Prasad.
