Canada bans its advertisement against America, which had deteriorated relations

News India Live, Digital Desk: The Canadian province of Ontario has decided to stop its advertising campaign being run in America, due to which the tension between the two countries had increased significantly. In this advertisement, the voice of former US President Ronald Reagan was used to criticize the current US tariff (import duty) policy, due to which the US President was so angry that he announced to end all trade negotiations with Canada.

After all, what was there in the advertisement?

The Ontario government began running an advertisement on American TV channels. It used excerpts from a radio speech former President Ronald Reagan gave in 1987. In this speech, Reagan was talking about how high tariffs lead to trade wars and ultimately harm American workers and consumers. The purpose of this advertisement was to make the American public understand how harmful their government’s policies could be for themselves.

Why did America get angry?

US President Donald Trump did not like this advertisement at all. Calling it “fake” and “fraud”, he announced the immediate end of all ongoing trade negotiations with Canada. Not only this, the Ronald Reagan Foundation itself also objected to this, saying that the Ontario government had selectively misrepresented some parts of the speech and had not even taken any permission for it.

Canada took a step back to start talks

In view of the criticism from all sides and deteriorating relations, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has decided to stop the advertisement. He said his aim was simply to start a conversation on the ill effects of tariffs. The advertising campaign will be paused from Monday to allow trade talks to resume. After this step, it is expected that the increased tension between the two neighboring countries will reduce to some extent.
