These days, amid the ruckus over ticket distribution in Bihar politics, a photo of a ‘briefcase’ has become the center of discussion on social media. During the ongoing tussle between JDU (JDU) and RJD (RJD) over the Gaighat assembly seat of Muzaffarpur district, serious allegations of corruption were made through a photograph, but the ‘photo war’ that took place soon after has blown the whole matter out of the water.
What is the whole ‘briefcase’ controversy?
The whole matter is regarding ticket from Gaighat seat. Prabhat Kiran (who is now in RJD) alleged that his father Maheshwar Prasad Yadav’s ticket was cut and given to Komal Singh, behind whom was the ‘thaali’ (money) given to top JDU leaders.
Blame: Prabhat Kiran shared a photo on Facebook in which JDU MLC Dinesh Singh is seen handing over a closed briefcase to working president Sanjay Jha. Prabhat termed it as ‘bag politics’ and ‘ticket deal’.
Counterattack: Within just two hours of this allegation, Komal Singh (Dinesh Singh’s daughter) released another photo (open briefcase) of the same incident. It is clearly visible in this photo that the briefcase did not contain money, but ‘Angavastra’ (a gift indicating respect).
Komal Singh’s clarification: ‘Do not defame the culture of Mithila’
Komal Singh termed the allegations as baseless and dirty politics and gave a detailed clarification:
Original reference: Komal Singh told that there was an NDA workers conference in Muzaffarpur regarding the preparations for the Prime Minister’s Madhubani rally on 24 April 2025.
Organizing banquet: A meal was organized at the residence of the top leaders to welcome and honor them.
Farewell Tradition: According to Komal, “In the culture of Mithila and Bihar, there is a tradition of gifting corsets to honored guests at the time of farewell. Father was giving the same respect which was wrongly presented in politics.”
AI angle and conflict
After Komal Singh’s evidence, Prabhat Kiran used an ‘AI-generated’ photo to further his point, which showed different clothes inside the briefcase. However, on this Komal Singh shared many other pictures of the conference, in which big leaders like Nitin Naveen, Shravan Kumar, Kedar Gupta and Devesh Chandra Thakur were also present on the stage.
This entire controversy has made it clear how social media and AI are used to sharpen political attacks, which can also be neutralized by responding with timely evidence.
Political chessboard of Gaighat: What happened when?
2020 election: Maheshwar Prasad Yadav contested the election on JDU ticket, but he lost to RJD’s Niranjan Rai.
2015 election: Maheshwar Yadav had defeated Veena Devi (Komal Singh’s mother).
present situation: In 2025, Veena Singh and Dinesh Singh wanted their daughter Komal Singh to be launched. The seat went to JDU and the ticket went to Komal Singh, after which Maheshwar Yadav and Prabhat Kiran joined RJD.
This entire episode has once again exposed the complexities of ‘ticket distribution’ in Bihar politics and the personal conflicts involved in it.
