Big update on income tax refund: Now there will be no delay in getting tax refund, processing will be very fast with ‘Project Insight 2.0’

The biggest wait for taxpayers after filing Income Tax Return (ITR) is to get their tax refund. Many times, due to technical errors, mismatches or scrutiny, it takes weeks and months to get the refund, due to which the working capital of common employers and small businessmen gets stuck. With the aim of providing a permanent solution to this problem and making the tax administration completely digital and seamless, the Income Tax Department is launching its much-awaited technological upgrade. ‘Project Insight 2.0’ In preparation for implementation. Equipped with state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning and advanced data analytics, this new system will not only keep an accurate eye on tax evasion, but will also ensure that the refunds of honest taxpayers are processed within a few days and transferred directly to their bank accounts.

What is Project Insight 2.0 and how will it work?

Project Insight is a flagship data-driven technology framework of the Income Tax Department, whose primary objective is to monitor financial transactions across the country and facilitate tax compliance. In its second phase i.e. Insight 2.0, the capacity of the Central Processing Center (CPC) is being upgraded manifold. The new system will do real-time auto-cross verification of the taxpayer’s Annual Information Statement (AIS), Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) and Form 26AS data with the claims made in the return. If no discrepancies are found in the returns, the system will approve the refund immediately without any manual intervention (Zero Manual Intervention), reducing the processing time from just a few hours to 2-3 days.

Major benefits available to taxpayers

  • Minimum time for refund: System automation will eliminate weeks of time spent processing routine and accurate returns.

  • Transparent and flawless investigation: There will be accurate data matching through advanced algorithms, which will virtually eliminate incidents of unnecessary notices or unnecessary withholding of refunds.

  • Quick Information and Alerts: If any minor discrepancy is found in the tax calculation or TDS claim, the system will immediately inform the taxpayer through the portal and email so that e-verification or correction can be done in time.

  • Digital Tracking: Taxpayers will be able to track every step real-time from refund issue to bank account credit on their e-filing dashboard.

Important precautions for taxpayers to get refund quickly

To take full advantage of the fast pace of Project Insight 2.0, taxpayers will need to get some basic formalities in order:

  • Bank account to be pre-validated: The bank account registered on the e-filing portal must be active and pre-validated and ‘Electronic Refund Credit’ (EVC) must be enabled on it.

  • Exact matching of name and personal details: There should be no difference in the spelling of name, date of birth and father’s name as recorded in PAN card, bank account and income tax return.

  • Instant e-Verification: After filing the return, it is mandatory to complete e-verification through Aadhaar OTP, Net Banking or EVC within the prescribed time limit, as without verification, the processing of the return does not start.

  • Correct matching of TDS and income: Declare all income sources (like savings account interest, dividends etc.) entered in your Form 16, 26AS and AIS correctly in the return.

Big step towards transparent and modern tax system

The advent of ‘Project Insight 2.0’ after faceless assessment and e-filing 2.0 is a concerted effort to bring the Indian direct tax system at par with global standards. The Government has a clear vision that honest taxpayers should get their rightful money refunded immediately without any administrative hassles, while identification of tax evasion cases should be done in a completely automated manner through data intelligence. This technological improvement will not only improve the taxpayer experience but will also strengthen trust and compliance in the country’s tax ecosystem.
