YouTube’s big announcement: Now views will be counted as soon as the video is played, years old rule changed; Know what will be the benefit to the creators

The world’s largest video streaming platform YouTube has announced a historic and revolutionary change in its views counting system. Till now, any long-form video had to be watched for a minimum duration set by the platform to be considered a view. But now from August 24, 2026, YouTube is going to implement a uniform scale for all video formats (long video, shorts and live stream), under which as soon as the user plays the video, i.e. from the very first frame, it will be counted as a view. With this decision of the Google-owned platform, like other social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, the public view count on YouTube will also be seen increasing rapidly.

Why did YouTube make this big change in the view counting rules?

According to YouTube, earlier there were different rules for counting views for different formats. An instant play view system was already in place for shorts, while for normal long videos it took some time for views to be registered. Due to these different metrics, there was confusion among many creators as to how much total exposure their content was getting. The company has decided to implement this unified system with the aim of bringing uniformity across the platform and giving creators a direct means to measure the true reach of their content.

‘Engaged Views’ metric will remain intact: How will the real audience be tracked?

Despite the rapid increase in the number of public views, YouTube has not eliminated the system of tracking real engagement. Actual views no longer counted the old way ‘Engaged Views’ in Advanced Mode of YouTube Analytics Will be available in the name of. This means creators will be able to easily see how many people simply clicked on the video and how many actually watched the video. This will not create any hindrance in understanding the quality of content and audience retention in depth.

What will be the big benefits to creators and channels?

This new rule is expected to provide several direct benefits to creators:

  • Public view count will increase rapidly: Initial clicks will be directly added to the public counter as soon as the video is uploaded, increasing the video’s chances of appearing in trending and recommendation algorithms faster.

  • Help with Brand Deals and Sponsorship: It will now become easier and more transparent for creators to show brands and sponsors the true scale and total exposure of their content.

  • Easy comparison between platforms: The comparative data of YouTube’s views compared to Instagram Reels and TikTok can now be measured on the same scale.

Will there be any impact on monetization and YPP’s earnings?

YouTube has clarified that this change will not have any negative impact on creators’ earnings or YouTube Partner Program (YPP) eligibility. Advertisement revenue and payouts will be decided on the basis of ‘Engaged Views’ and ‘Engaged Watch Hours’ as before. The requirements for monetization will now be known as ‘Qualified Watch Hours’ and ‘Qualified Shorts Views’. In short, the numbers displayed on public screens may be big and attractive, but the actual earnings will depend on the actual quality and watch-time of the video.
