News India Live, Digital Desk: If you live in Delhi and are thinking of getting your child admitted in school, then this news is very important for you. Delhi government has taken a big and important decision regarding admission in schools. The government has fixed the minimum age for admission in Class 1 at 6 years, which will be implemented from the academic session of 2026-27.

What is this new rule?

According to the circular issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE), Delhi, no school can give admission in the first class from the session 2026-27 to a child whose age has not completed 6 years on March 31 of that year. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, in which emphasis has been laid on the right age for early education of children.

Age limit fixed for nursery and KG also

Not just Class 1, the government has also fixed the minimum age for admission in Nursery and KG (Pre-Primary):

  • Nursery: For admission, the child must be at least 3 years old.
  • KG (Pre-School): For admission, the age of the child should be at least 4 years.
  • Class 1 (Pre-Primary): For admission, the age of the child should be at least 5 years.

These rules are currently for the session 2025-26, after which the minimum age for Class 1 will be 6 years from 2026-27.

Why was this decision taken?

The main reason behind this decision is to reduce the burden of education on children at a young age. Experts believe that by starting schooling at the right age, children learn better and their mental development takes place properly. Children often come under pressure when they take admission in Class 1 at a young age.

This decision will be applicable to all government, government aided, MCD, NDMC and Delhi Cantonment Board schools of Delhi. The Directorate of Education has also instructed the schools to thoroughly inform all the parents about this new age limit.

Therefore, if you are planning to enroll your child in the coming years, it is very important for you to keep these new rules in mind.
