Big blow to Trump from Supreme Court: President will not be able to remove Federal Governor Lisa Cook, know what is the whole controversy

A major legal obstacle has arisen for US President Donald Trump. The US Supreme Court on Monday, in a historic and important decision, has blocked President Trump’s attempt to dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. This decision, which came by a majority of 5-4, has given a major blow to the executive powers of the Trump administration. This is the first time since the establishment of the Federal Reserve in 1913 that the Supreme Court has outright rejected an attempt by a President to remove a senior official of the central bank.

Supreme Court rejects Trump administration’s appeal

A nine-member bench of the Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration’s petition challenging the lower court order preventing Cook from being fired. District Judge Zia Cobb had already made it clear that removing Lisa Cook without proper notice and hearing is a direct violation of ‘due process’. After this, the Columbia Circuit Appeals Court also upheld this decision, which has now been finalized by the Supreme Court.

What is the root of the dispute?

In August 2025, President Trump issued a letter dismissing Cook through social media. He had accused Lisa Cook of cheating, which Cook and her supporters have completely denied. Lisa Cook, who is the first black female governor of the Federal Reserve, says that this action is actually being taken due to ongoing ideological differences regarding monetary policy. His tenure is fixed till 2038 and he was appointed in 2022. After this decision, Trump expressed his displeasure and termed the court proceedings as ‘completely procedural’.

Independence of the Federal Reserve and Trump’s stance

The autonomy of the Federal Reserve, the world’s most influential central bank, is considered the backbone of the US economy. The Federal Reserve has been Trump’s target since his return to power. Earlier, he had also expressed his displeasure during the tenure of Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. Even after Kevin Warsh became the new chairman, the tussle between the Trump administration and the Federal Reserve continues. This decision in the Lisa Cook case has ensured that the President cannot remove central bank officials on his own will, which is considered a major victory for American institutional democracy.
