Bangladesh’s new move against India? After promoting China on chicken neck, now a big controversy broke out on Teesta river Bangladesh’s new move against India? After encouraging China near the ‘Chicken’s Neck’, a major dispute has now erupted over the Teesta River.

A big development is currently being seen in the geopolitics of South Asia. The recent steps of Bangladesh, one of India’s closest neighbours, have created a situation of tension in the diplomatic relations between the two countries. According to experts, Bangladesh has once again embarked on the path of ignoring India’s strategic interests. First, there were efforts to give a bigger role to China near the most sensitive part of India i.e. Siliguri Corridor and now Dhaka is showing sharp attitude regarding the water of Teesta River, which has increased the concern in Indian security and strategic circles.

India’s concern increased due to China’s entry near Siliguri corridor

The narrow strip connecting the north-eastern states of India with the rest of the country, called ‘Chicken Neck’ or Siliguri Corridor, is extremely sensitive from the strategic point of view. Recently, there have been reports of Bangladesh approving Chinese investment and infrastructure projects very close to this area. Defense experts believe that any kind of presence of Dragon (China) in this area can directly prove to be a major threat to India’s national security. India has always been opposing the interference of external forces in this region.

Bangladeshi leaders’ bad words on Teesta river water

Amidst the chicken neck dispute, the issue of sharing of Teesta river water has also become heated. Sharp statements have started from the political circles and administrative officials of Bangladesh regarding Teesta River. While both the countries have been claiming to find a solution to this decades-old water dispute through dialogue, now Bangladesh is suddenly adopting an aggressive stance. Some groups there are advocating bypassing India and taking financial help from China on the Teesta project, which is being seen as a direct wink to New Delhi.

India-Bangladesh border will impact local level and regional security

The direct impact of this diplomatic tension can be seen on the border states of India, especially the local areas of West Bengal and Assam. The water of Teesta River is considered the lifeline for the farmers and agriculture of the northern districts of West Bengal. If Bangladesh takes any unilateral step along with China on this issue, it will not only increase the tension on the border but can also cause a deep crisis on the local economy and water security. This is the reason why the central government and strategic experts are keeping a close watch on this entire incident.
