Dhaka: The dramatic developments in Bangladesh since the change of power have now taken international turns. The National Bureau of Bangladesh Police (NCB) has made an official request from Interpol to issue a red corner notice against the overthrow Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and his associates. The demand has been made against a total of 12 people including Sheikh Hasina, including former cabinet ministers, advisors, military officers and civil officials. All of them are serious allegations of ‘crime against humanity’ and ‘genocide’.
Government fell after student movement, Hasina settled in India
Last year, there were strong protests under the leadership of students in Bangladesh, due to which Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government collapsed. After this, 77 -year -old Hasina fled to India and has been living in India since then. The Bangladesh government has started efforts to bring them back and in this context, steps have been taken to create international pressure through Interpol.
International Criminal Tribunal Warrant
On 8 August 2024, Muhammad Yunus took over as the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government. A few weeks later, Bangladesh’s International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) issued a warrant against Sheikh Hasina and others. According to the tribunal, Hasina and her government committed several human rights violations while in power, as well as cruel acts and massacres against the opponents.
Importance of Interpol’s Red Corner Notice
Interpol Red Corner notice is requested to detect a fugitive, temporarily arrest and receive technical assistance for extradition. Interpol shares this information with police agencies around the world, which makes it possible to take action against that person in countries like India. At NCB’s request, Interpol is now in the process of officially identifying Hasina as a fugitive.
Efforts are on to bring them back from India.
On January 21, 2025, the interim government of Bangladesh made it clear that it would continue efforts to bring Sheikh Hasina back from India and demand international intervention if necessary. In November 2024, the ICT Chief Prosecutor Office formally requested the police headquarters to initiate efforts to arrest Hasina and other absconding accused through Interpol.
Serious action after political turmoil
In Bangladesh, currently the ruling interim government is blaming the people sitting in power for their mismanagement. The case opened against Sheikh Hasina highlights human rights and political stability in Bangladesh at the international level. Now everyone’s eyes are on the role of the Government of India. If the red corner notice is issued, the pressure on India may increase to send Sheikh Hasina back.
