Last year, India ordered 41 Canadian diplomats to leave the country after diplomatic relations between India and Canada deteriorated.
The effect of strained relations between the two countries is visible. According to the latest data released by the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Canada approved 69,203 visa applications in the October-December 2023 period and Canada processed 1.19 lakh visa applications from India in the same period in 2022. Thus the visa application process has reduced by 42 percent.
If we talk about student visas, the number of student visas issued has decreased by 15 percent during the same period. According to an English newspaper report, there has been no response from the Canadian High Commission on this issue.
However, the decline in student visas is not surprising. Because the person in charge of the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship warned last October that a reduction in the number of Canadian diplomats in India would have an adverse impact on visa applications. Because now we have reduced the number of staff working on visa applications.
It is true and the number of applications being processed for Canadian visa from India has declined and this decline is likely to continue in the near future.
Last year, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau publicly accused India of being involved in the killing of Khalistan terrorist Nijjar. There are still no signs of improvement in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
